How Often Should You Clean Your Driveway?

Most block paved and concrete driveways in the West Midlands benefit from a clean once a year. Our damp, mild climate suits moss and algae, and once they take hold in jointing sand or porous concrete they spread quickly. The surface turns slippery in wet weather and the finish slowly breaks down. An annual clean, timed for spring or autumn, usually keeps on top of it before it becomes a bigger job.

What changes how often a driveway needs cleaning

• Shade. A drive that gets little direct sun stays damp for longer, which is exactly where moss and algae grow fastest.
• Trees and hedges. Falling leaves, seeds and sap feed growth and stain paving, especially where they sit and rot in the joints.
• Traffic. Heavy use grinds dirt into the surface and adds oil drips and tyre marks near the garage.
• Surface type. Block paving collects moss and weeds in its joints. Concrete tends to stain and turn green in patches. Tarmac shows oil and loose stones.

A shaded drive under trees with two cars on it can need attention every six to nine months. An open, sunny drive with light use can often go longer than a year.

Signs your driveway is due a clean

• A green or black film that turns slippery when it rains.
• Moss or weeds growing up between the blocks.
• Paving that has lost its colour and looks uniformly grey.
• Dark oil patches or tyre marks that no longer wash off with a hose.
• Jointing sand washed out, leaving gaps between the blocks.

Why the method matters as much as the timing

Pressure should be matched to the surface. Concrete can take more, while block paving needs care so the jointing is not blasted out. After cleaning, block paving should have fresh sand brushed back into the joints to keep the blocks locked together, and a treatment helps slow moss and algae coming back.

Keeping it clean between visits

• Sweep regularly, and clear leaves before they sit and rot on the surface.
• Pull weeds from the joints while they are small.
• Deal with oil drips quickly; fresh spills lift far more easily than old ones.
• Keep gutters and downpipes clear so they are not spilling water onto the drive.
